“Beginning is the key to moving forward. It’s important to break down large, overwhelming tasks into smaller, more manageable ones before beginning the first one if you want to start something.” Mark Twain
When you have so much to do and so much on your mind, do you ever feel overburdened? It’s crucial to STOP and refocus when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Since the logical thing to do when under stress is to try and work harder, that seems counterintuitive to us. You shouldn’t do that, though. Consider everything that needs to be done for a while.
Get yourself a pack of 3×5 colored index cards in some really cool colors. Neon green is my preferred card color. Take out the cards and write one thought on each one when you start to feel overwhelmed. Maybe one says to go to the store, another says to call Mary, and yet another says to clear out the inbox. Continue until you feel completely exhausted mentally. Then look at all the cards and ask yourself “What is the best way for me to use my time right now?” Turn over that card you are holding. Then ask “What should you do that is second in importance?” Take that card, then flip it over and place it on top of the first card. Continue until all cards have been revealed. When you turn the pile over, your ideas are in a logical order and are prioritized according to importance.
If any of the cards represent a sizable project, divide the project into smaller tasks and create a card for each task.
Other uses:
To get the kids to help:
Each card has a chore listed on it. Let the children choose one or two cards from the deck (they can’t see them), then send them off to complete their assigned tasks. Put a prize on the back of the card that they receive when they turn it in.
When you’re on the road:
12 3×5 cards should be cut into clips with a small colored binder clip. Keep the clips in your pocket or purse. Write one task per card as you think of them while you’re out and about. When you get back home or to the office put them in your “In” basket and you won’t have to try and remember all those great things you though of when you were out.
Getting organized:
On each card, note one area that needs organization after taking a look around the room. Refrigerators, pantries, south and north cabinets, and other appliances are examples of kitchen areas. shuffle the deck, and then play the card that appears on top.
